Abstract
Since the 1964 movie "Goldfinger," lasers have been used in the entertainment industry. Laser shows began around 1973. One might reasonably expect that laser safety issues would have been thoroughly addressed over the past twenty-five years. However, this study reveals that the industry struggles to assess the risks associated with their work. A nationwide survey of law enforcement personnel indicates that they rarely possess the expertise necessary to judge the safety of laser shows. Consequently, there is often a significant gap between laser companies and those responsible for enforcing entertainment and health and safety regulations.
A hazard assessment method has been developed, treating any laser show as a series of modules that may present different hazards at various stages of their lifecycle, with different people potentially exposed to these hazards.
